Zika Virus: How You Can Prepare

Organizations are making strategic plans on how to best control these vector mosquito types in the United States.

According to Toby Merlin M. D. with the CDC, the ‪Zika virus‬ is a threat to the United States because there are many parts of the country — particularly the Southeast up through the eastern Midwest — where the vector mosquitoes for Zika virus easily can live and propagate (see article here). Symptoms of the Zika virus include fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes. People may also experience fatigue, fever, chills, loss of appetite, headache, or vomiting. There is no evidence that Zika can cause death, but some cases have been reported with more serious complications in those with pre-existing medical conditions. It has also been associated with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the nervous system. One of the largest, most well known red flags of the Zika virus has been the severe birth defects found in thousands of babies born to mothers infected with the Zika virus, primarily those (or their partners) who live or have traveled in tropical regions.

As of right now there is no treatment or vaccine for the Zika infection. As companies and scientists race to develop a safe and effective vaccine – which could take over a year to start even larger-scale clinical trials – you can take measures to protect yourself TODAY.
